Jonesborough, Tennessee
Founded in 1779, 17 years before Tennessee became a state, Jonesborough is Tennessee's oldest town. Surrounded by rolling hills and farmland, Jonesborough's historic downtown hosts weekly festivals including the National Storytelling Festival.
In early 2025, Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Inc. (BWXT) announced plans to rezone 128 acres of farmland to high impact industrial for the purpose of building facilities to become the leading producer of high purity depleted uranium. Despite public outcry, and a petition with over 10,000 signatures, the Washington County commission voted 10-5 to approve the rezoning in March 2026.
